Part-time Accompanist

Position Announcement
Calvary Church is looking for a part-time piano accompanist for Sunday worship and occasional other services. Interested parties should email a resume to Rev. Tim Emmett-Rardin (no cover letter necessary).

Position Description
Who We Are
Calvary United Methodist Church is a progressive, racially integrated urban congregation located in the Cedar Park neighborhood of West/Southwest Philadelphia. We are a Reconciling Congregation within the United Methodist Church, designated as such in 1985 to formally and intentionally proclaim our acceptance and affirmation of LGBTQIA+ persons. In that spirit, we are a community rooted in Christian tradition that is being built by and brought to people committed to: 
  • engaging in intentional dialogue that strives to care for and heal one another, celebrating both our diversity and that which we hold in common;
  • celebrating the divine in our lives through traditional and new ways of worship;
  • fostering personal experiences of the Holy Spirit and inner spiritual growth;
  • operating for peace and justice for all people and all creation within our midst and throughout the world; and
  • supporting activities and institutions that lovingly and passionately engage in the eradication of racism, sexism, heterosexism, classism, poverty and all forms of abuse and oppression.

Qualifications/Expectations
  • skilled pianist, with at least some experience playing piano for group/congregational singing
  • basic familiarity and experience with sacred/church music
  • expressed support of the overall mission and values of the congregation
  • commitment to inclusive/expansive language with musical offerings

Desired Qualifications
  • skilled in playing a second instrument
  • competent vocalist
  • some experience directing choirs

Responsibilities
  • provide musical accompaniment for Sunday hybrid/virtual worship (hours: approximately 10:45 am to 12:45 pm); note that worship is currently virtual-only the last Sunday of every month
  • help select/provide “special music” offering for weekly worship, in consultation and cooperation with volunteer choir coordinator and small Calvary choir
  • weekly communication/meeting with the pastor to coordinate music for worship (in person or virtual)

Time Commitment
  • 2-3 hours per week, primarily (if not entirely) on Sundays

Compensation/Benefits 
  • $100 per week
  • four paid Sundays off each year; additional unpaid Sundays off can be negotiated
