PLEASE NOTE: We are taking a break from Community Rhythm Circle for February and March, with plans to resume April 13th. Stay tuned for updates.
![]() Calvary hosts a monthly, in-person Community Rhythm Circle (CRC) the 2nd Thursday of every month, 7-8:15 pm - nurturing a spirit of connection, community-building and healing.
All are welcome - no drumming or rhythm experience is required. Participants are encouraged to bring their own instruments (of any kind, drums or otherwise), but loaners are available. Please use the 48th Street entrance (see accessibility details below). Masks are encouraged but not required - click here for full COVID protocols. The CRC is led by West Philly professional drummers, Jan Jeffries and Anssumane Sillá. Jan, aka Ms. Rhythm Speaker, has traveled throughout the world, performed, taught and composed with people of all ages and special needs. An award-winning percussionist, she's led drumming for various public concerts and marches - and continues to perform, record and teach. Jan has recorded and/or performed with (among others): Better Days, Solomon Dub, Fostina Dixon, Monnette Sudler, Sharon Katz and the Peace Train, North American Bush Band, John Kruz and Makana. Whether it's keeping the rhythm with her feet and sticks or skin on skin, Jan says word is, "Don't Break the Rhythm!" A native of Guinea Bissau who has been in Philadelphia since 2008, Anssumane has performed around the world as both a dancer and drummer - with the National Ballet of Guinea Bissau and the Voices of Africa Drum Ensemble. He has been a featured artist for the Pennsylvania Humanities Council Humanities on the Road initiative, choreographer for the Kùlú Mèlé African Dance Ensemble, recipient of “Best in Philly” Dance Class, 2012 and two time awardee of the Folk Art PA grant. There is no cost to participate, though donations - online or during each CRC - are encouraged to help offset expenses. ACCESSIBILITY: Our building is wheelchair-accessible with a lift that takes guests from the ground level outside (the red door at the corner of 48th & Baltimore) up to our sanctuary and church office, and down to restrooms, classrooms and our Fellowship Hall (including kitchen). The door requires a code so if you're coming and require use of the lift, please call (215-724-1702) or email the church office well before your visit so we can coordinate logistics. |
