Ministries related to peace and justice education, advocacy and action in the immediate community and beyond. Current/recent efforts include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Fair Trade - The UMCOR Coffee Project
Calvary sells various fair trade products (e.g. coffee, tea, chocolate, etc.) through the Equal Exchange Interfaith Program to benefit both Calvary and the United Methodist Committee on Relief. Volunteers are needed to help with overall coordination, staff Sundays and special events and process sales. - Green Team
Be part of Calvary's effort to reduce our collective carbon footprint - through changes in building practices and policies, congregational and community education around ecological practices at home and promotion of local eco-justice actions and events. - Justice Luncheons
Join us for a light meal and justice-related presentation/discussion - typically held the 2nd Sunday of the month - immediately following worship. See Calendar for upcoming dates and discussion topics.
- Network of Spiritual Progressives
Calvary is working to build an active Philadelphia-area chapter of The Network of Spiritual Progressives. Contact Tim Emmett-Rardin or Pastor John for more info or to get involved.
- New Sanctuary Movement of Philadelphia
Calvary is an NSM member congregation, actively supporting its ongoing organizing for immigrant justice in Philadelphia, and just and humane immigrant reform on the national level. Contact Lauren Ballester for more info or to get involved; see Calendar for upcoming meetings/actions.
- Pennsylvania Interfaith Power & Light
Calvary is a member of PAIPL, a statewide community of congregations, faith-based organizations and individuals of faith responding to climate change as a moral issue, through advocacy, energy conservation, energy efficiency and the use of clean, renewable energy. - Philadelphia Interfaith Walk for Peace and Reconciliation
Calvary members participate each year in this city-wide "walking dialogue" with people from a variety of religious (and non-religious) traditions. The Walk is typically held in late April or early May - see Calendar for specific details.
- POWER (Philadelphians Organized to Witness Empower and Rebuild)
Calvary is a founding member of this interfaith organization - part of the PICO National Network - which mobilizes local congregations to organize for social and economic justice in Philly. Contact Beth Jemison for more info or to get involved; see Calendar for upcoming meetings/actions.
- Reconciling United Methodists of Eastern PA
A group committed to the full inclusion of LGBTQ persons and their families in the life of the church. Calvary is actively involved as the first Reconciling Congregation in Philadelphia, and one of the first in the country. - West/Southwest Philadelphia Peace Coalition
